...and you would become aware of
how difficult it is to be treated equally under the law in Windcrest, unless you are looked upon with
favor by Mayor Baxter.
For example, CM Wright witnessed
three attempts by campaign supporters of Mayor Baxter to remove CM Pam Dodson
from her place on City Council. Indisputable evidence cleared Dodson of all charges. However, Mayor Baxter,
CM Shelton and CM Jacobi still voted to remove her.
In
June, the Express News published opinion pieces discrediting CM Wright based
partly on information on her IRS personal tax form W-9, which could only have
been obtained from her City Personnel File.
Who violated state and federal laws to release that form? Who combed
that file looking for information to pass to the media? The opinion pieces spewed half-truths, lies
and innuendo smearing her, while quoting CM Jacobi.
Soon after, the Mayor's campaign
supporters, including Shelton and Jacobi, were seen gathering recall petition
signatures for her removal based on the columnist's opinions and the W-9. The recall naively accuses CM Wright of
denying she is a U.S. Citizen, although she has been legally registered to vote
in Windcrest since 1992.
But their main reason to remove
CM Wright was that she does not say the Pledge of Allegiance. She doesn't say
the pledge for the same reason the Windcrest City Secretary doesn't – her
religious conviction. The Supreme Court
has upheld that right. She honors the flag at all Council Meetings during the
pledge by standing and facing the flag. The American flag is very dear to CM
Wright because her family dates from the Revolutionary War.
Although the recall petition was
submitted to City Hall twice with insufficient valid signatures, the City
Secretary certified it anyway. Despite Wright publicly rejecting the validity
of the petition, Mayor Baxter, CM Shelton and CM Jacobi voted to place the
recall on the ballot. Note: while attempting to defame the two City
Councilwomen, the Mayor, CM Shelton and CM Jacobi tried to retain the City's Government
Relations Officer, in spite of the fact that he was under indictment for 2
first degree felony counts.
It should be of great concern to
citizens that the Mayor improperly ordered three attorneys hired, without
approval by Council, to answer a writ of mandamus from Wright. They were paid
$18,100 of the Citizens' money to convince the court that her motive was only
to stop the Citizens’ right to vote.
If this matter had been handled
in accordance with our City Charter, CM Wright would have no objection to
putting this matter on the ballot. Her
future on our Council is in your hands.
